Early this Monday morning, in the heart of London, over sixty people arrived at the Design Council, for the “BIG BANG” breakfast launch of Greengaged, the eagerly anticipated sustainability hub at London Design Festival 2008!
Following an introductory welcome from David Kester, Chief Exec of the Design Council, Sophie Thomas, co-founder of thomas.matthews, took to the stand and set an ambitious launch debate: “This house believes that the primary responsibility for tackling global climate change lies with the design industry.”

Design Council Chair Sir Michael Bichard, Julias Howles MBE, Clive Grinyer of Cisco, Ed McCann of Expedition Engineering and Dorothy MacKenzie of Dragon each offered their opinions and perspectives on the debate: where does the ecological responsibility lie? “Darwin didn’t say it was survival of the fittest, he said it is the most adaptable to change that survive”, said Ed McCann. Setting the scene for the entire Greengaged hub of events, the two hour debate saw a lively discussion with the speakers and the audience.
With over 40 events scheduled here at the Design Council over the next nine days, the Greengaged hub is sure to offer plentiful insights and raise many questions as to how we can co-transform the debate into tangible actions for the future.
